Intraspecific variation in testis asymmetry in birds: evidence for naturally occurring compensation.
نویسندگان
چکیده
In many taxa, the left and right testes often differ in size. The compensation hypothesis states that one testis of the pair serves as a 'back-up' for any reduced function in the other and provides a mechanism to explain intraspecific variation in degree and direction of gonad asymmetry. Although testis asymmetry is common in birds, evidence for natural testis compensation is unknown. Using a novel quantitative approach that can be applied to any bilateral organ or structure, we show that testis compensation occurs naturally in birds and can be complete when one testis fails to develop. Owing to a recurrent risk of testis impairment and an evolutionary trade-off between natural and sexual selections acting on the arrangement of internal organs in species with abdominal and/or seasonal testes, compensation adds an important, but neglected, dimension to measures of male reproductive investment.

Appraisal of the entire mitochondrial genome for DNA barcoding in birds
DNA barcoding based on a standardized region of 648 base pairs of mitochondrial DNAsequences from Cytochrome C Oxidase 1 (COX1) is proposed for animal species identification.Recent studies suggested that DNA barcoding has been effective for identifying 94% of birdspecies. The proposed threshold of 10 times the average intraspecific variation could be used forthe identification and delimitation ...
متن کاملMolecular population genetics of the Arabidopsis CAULIFLOWER regulatory gene: nonneutral evolution and naturally occurring variation in floral homeotic function.
The evolution of interspecies differences in morphology requires sufficient within-species variation in developmental regulatory systems on which evolutionary forces can act. Molecular analyses of naturally occurring alleles of the Arabidopsis thaliana CAULIFLOWER locus reveal considerable intraspecific diversity at this floral homeotic gene, and the McDonald-Kreitman test suggests that this ge...
متن کاملMortality of wild swans associated with naturally infection with highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus in Iran
In the February 2006 in two wetlands in northern Iran, the mortality among wild swans was observed. Paralysis was the most prominent feature of the disease. Histologically, diffused necrosis of acinar cells in pancreas, degeneration and necrosis of some neurons in central nervous system (CNS), sever necrotic and hemorrhagic enteritis, foci of haemorrahge and myocardial cell necrosis in the he...
متن کاملFrom phenotypic to molecular polymorphisms involved in naturally occurring variation of plant development.
An enormous amount of naturally occurring genetic variation affecting development is found within wild and domesticated plant species. This diversity is presumably involved in plant adaptation to different natural environments or in human preferences. In addition, such intraspecific variation provides the basis for the evolution of plant development at larger evolutionary scales. Natural phenot...
متن کاملPreparation and In Vitro Evaluation of Sustained-Release Matrix Tablets of Flutamide Using Synthetic and Naturally Occurring Polymers
Frequent dosing of the potent anti-androgen, flutamide, is necessary to reach a therapeutic level for the treatment of prostatic carcinoma. Sustained delivery of the drug could reduce the adverse effects such as gastrointestinal disorders and improve patient compliance. In the present study sustained-release matrix tablets of flutamide were prepared by direct compression method using different ...
